A contemporary, orchestral big band sound that crosses boundaries and challenges established listening habits.

The FUCHSTHONE ORCHESTRA represents anything but a traditional big band. With an expanded line-up including violin, vocals and electronics, the 20 award-winning musicians represent the state of the art of contemporary large jazz ensembles. The works of band leaders Christina Fuchs and Caroline Thon are characterised by powerful tutti passages and brass voicings à la Maria Schneider followed by moments of silence, punctuated by collective improvisations by smaller sub-units of the band. The result is an impressive musical experience that makes full use of the diverse sound colours and possible combinations of the instruments involved.

„Spectacular concert by the Fuchsthone Orchestra from Cologne rocked the Pantheon…certainly one of the best of the 13th Bonn Jazz Festival…“

09/23 Süddeutsche Zeitung

„Experienced big band masterminds have joined forces with Christina Fuchs and Caroline Thon. ‚Structures & Beauty’, the title of the highly acclaimed album recently released on the Enja & Yellowbird label, captures in a nutshell what distinguishes the Cologne-based FUCHSTHONE ORCHESTRA. Like magic, this 20-piece orchestra transforms complex compositions that intertwine orchestral jazz, classical, avant-garde, rock and subtly applied…”

08/23 JazzPodium

„System blasters! Is this (still) jazz or simply music that doesn’t care about categories? Are we listening to notes that have the potential to become system breakers? Anyone who gets involved with the good ninety minutes of Fuchsthone Orchestra will not only experience a journey through the world of improvised music that is as exciting as it is challenging, but also will have to deal with such questions.“

“...a spectacular multimedia concert by Cologne's Fuchsthone Orchestra raised the bar for the future of contemporary jazz orchestra culture.

Stefan Pieper, JazzZeitung 9/24

The synaesthetic overall experience was enhanced by innovative light art. Claudia Schmitz, a visual artist with heart and soul, created a visual world that filled the space with rotating geometric figures and abstract, proliferating light patterns. Textures of light and shapes spread out unpredictably and were as intensely charged as the sound eruptions of the large ensemble.”
